Women & Girls Reporter

Indiana

Women & Girls Reporter Free Press Indiana (FPI), a nonprofit media organization with a mission to fill information gaps in the state, is hiring a reporter to cover a new beat: the well-being of Hoosier women and girls. We’re looking for someone who is excited to travel around Indiana, especially areas underserved by news coverage, meet people and learn about their experiences and stories.

The minimum salary for this position is $60,000, but could go up to $85,000, depending on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.

The Role Working independently and with partners across the state, including Mirror Indy (FPI’s first newsroom), this reporter will bring us news coverage, personal stories and deep dives from cities, towns and rural communities, reflecting all voices.

This new role was inspired, in part, by research from the Women’s Fund of Central Indiana and Girl Coalition of Indiana, outlining the key challenges women and girls face statewide. You’ll investigate these systemic issues that affect more than half our state’s population, shedding light on how state and local policies shape their lives and working with them to champion solutions and drive change.

But, it’s just as important to talk about the opportunities women are creating for themselves and others — stories of resilience and success.

Throughout Indiana’s history, women have fought for equity and justice, and many have had national impact. Some examples include entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker; Holocaust survivor Eva Kor; public housing reformer Albion Fellows Bacon; and record company founder Vivian Carter.

Deadline for Submissions: August 11, 2025
